Background
The number font is inspired by the typical hand-painted house numbers on buildings from the 1920s in the neighbourhood De Baarsjes that I have documented over the years. Their numerals have a geometric basis with half filled-in counters.
First version
My first version is from April 2022. I hadn't made a type design before, so it was an interesting adventure and a good learning experience. I used my photos of house numbers as my inspiration. I think the idea is already coming across, but the numerals are still quite irregular individually and as a set.
Second version
My second version is from December 2024. I used my first version as my starting point, but I have redrawn the numerals from scratch using different software from what I used the first time. I tried to make the circles and ellipses more regular and give all the diagonals the same angle.
